    Most WordPress site owners install Yoast SEO and move on without touching the configuration. Defaults stay in place. Some serve your site well. Others silently work against it. Spent years configuring Yoast SEO on client sites, including Calgary SEO campaigns where on-page setup matters as much as authority. The same gaps show up repeatedly. Setup wizard gets skipped. Search appearance settings stay at factory defaults. Meta descriptions go unwritten across dozens of pages.

    Roughly thirty minutes when you know the sequence. This guide covers every key setting in order, from installation through site-level work down to per-page optimisation in the editor.

    Installing Yoast SEO on Your WordPress Site

    One place. Three clicks. Open the dashboard. Under Plugins, click Add New. Type the plugin name in the search bar. It sits at the top. Click Install Now, then Activate. Before continuing: check whether other SEO plugins are active at the same time. Running it alongside Rank Math or All in One SEO generates conflicting structured data. Deactivate competing SEO plugins before proceeding. After activation, a new SEO menu item appears in the dashboard. A meta box also gets added below the content editor on every post and page. You will use the main menu for site-level settings. The meta box handles per-page work.

    Running the First-Time Configuration Wizard

    Most people skip this. That is the first mistake. Under SEO > General, the first-time configuration tab covers settings that affect every page on your site simultaneously. The setup wizard handles site representation, social profiles, and site connections. Skipping it means your schema output may be wrong from day one. Work through the setup sections one by one. Take the time.

    Person or Organisation?

    Two choices. One right answer for most sites. Yoast SEO asks whether your site represents a Person or an Organisation. For business websites, choose Organisation. Personal blogs and practitioners publishing under their own name should choose Person. This answer feeds into schema markup across your entire site. Search engines use it to identify the entity behind your content. Get it wrong and every page carries misconfigured structured data. For Organisation setups, provide your organisation name exactly as it should appear in structured data. Also upload a square logo at minimum 512 by 512 pixels. It goes into your Knowledge Graph output. Inconsistency between your logo, business name, and website URL across structured data hurts entity recognition. Keep them consistent across every field.

    Social Profiles and Site Connections

    Both live here. Do both before leaving the wizard. The social profiles section accepts URLs for Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter/X, Instagram, Pinterest, and YouTube. Add every active platform. Skip dormant accounts. Search engines use these URLs to connect your profiles to your site entity in the Knowledge Graph. Site connections is where you paste verification tokens. Google Search Console, Bing Webmaster Tools, and Yandex each provide one. Search Console is non-negotiable for any site approaching search engine optimization with intent. Bing Webmaster Tools takes five minutes to verify. Both are free. After the wizard, log in to Search Console and confirm the verification completed. The request gets submitted during the wizard. Confirmation lives inside Search Console itself.

    Configuring Search Appearance Settings

    More decisions here than most setup guides cover. Under SEO > Search Appearance, you control how posts, pages, and custom content types show up in search results. Title templates, default meta descriptions, what gets indexed. Each content type has its own settings tab.

    Title Templates and Meta Descriptions

    Defaults are acceptable. Leaving descriptions blank is not. The default title template for posts is the post title, a separator, and your site name. Most setups can leave this alone. The separator is personal preference: vertical bar or hyphen. Neither affects rankings. Meta descriptions need writing on every post and page. The field is there; filling it in is your job. A solid meta description runs 120 to 155 characters. Include the primary keyphrase. Write something that gives a reason to click. Google overrides them frequently, substituting an excerpt from your content, but writing them still improves results for impressions where your version displays.

    Content Types and Taxonomies to Noindex

    Not every page belongs in search results. Tag archives are thin content on most sites. Dozens of tags with one or two posts each create noise in your crawl budget. Under the Taxonomies tab, set Tags to noindex. Author archives follow the same logic. If a single author runs the site, noindex those too. Multiple-author sites with distinct content per person can leave author archives indexed. Categories deserve different treatment. Well-structured category pages can rank and often do. Leave those indexed unless you have a specific reason to change them.

    Breadcrumbs Setup

    Worth enabling early. The breadcrumbs settings tab under Search Appearance lets you configure the separator and path structure. Display on your site depends on the active theme. Most modern WordPress themes support breadcrumbs natively. Older themes may need a short PHP snippet in the template file. Documentation covers the exact code needed. They also show up in Google Search Console’s structured data report once the pages are crawled. Checking there confirms the markup is rendering correctly across your site.

    Setting Up Your XML Sitemap

    One toggle. Significant consequences. Under SEO > General > Features, the XML sitemaps toggle should be enabled. Sitemap generation is automatic at yourdomain.com/sitemap_index.xml. Confirm that URL loads in your browser before moving on. Then go to Search Console. Under Sitemaps, submit that URL. Do the same in Bing Webmaster Tools. Both submissions tell the crawlers exactly where to find every page on your site worth indexing. Larger sites generate a sitemap index at the root URL that lists each individual sitemap file by content type. That structure makes it straightforward to monitor crawl coverage for articles, pages, and custom post types separately, and to spot when a section stops getting crawled.

    What Stays Out of the Sitemap

    Handled automatically in most cases. Pages set to noindex are excluded from the sitemap automatically. The tag and author archives you noindexed earlier will not appear there. Privacy policies and form confirmation pages can be individually set to noindex through the meta box on each of those pages. Paginated archive pages, page two, page three, and beyond, receive canonical tags pointing back to page one. Those canonicals reduce duplicate content signals without removing anything from your site entirely. Your website architecture stays intact. Only the signals sent to search engines change.

    Connecting Google Search Console

    Two separate platforms. One connection worth making. The two platforms are independent. Search Console receives the verification and the sitemap. Actual ranking data, query impressions, click-through rates, and crawl coverage live inside it. After verifying through the wizard, open Search Console. Submit the sitemap URL. Then check the Coverage report. Pages listed as excluded or errored are worth investigating first. The Performance report shows what queries your pages appear for, click volume by query, and average position over time. Worth reviewing monthly. Crawl issues that the Coverage report surfaces, such as pages blocked by robots.txt or returning server errors, compound quietly if left unaddressed. A proper website audit catches site-wide crawl issues that Search Console surfaces one page at a time. For broader patterns such as redirect chains, canonical errors, and crawl budget issues across your entire site, a full SEO audit is the right starting point.

    Optimising Individual Posts and Pages

    Where the ongoing work actually happens. Every post and page in the editor shows an SEO meta box below the content area, or a sidebar panel in the block editor. Per-page settings live here. These override site-level defaults where needed.

    Setting the Focus Keyphrase

    One keyphrase per page. The focus keyphrase goes in the SEO tab of the meta box. Enter the phrase the page should rank for. One phrase only. The analysis then checks whether that phrase appears in the title, the meta description, the first paragraph, subheadings, and the body of your content at appropriate density. Premium extends this with related keyphrases and synonyms. For longer posts covering a topic in depth, those additional fields help the analysis reflect natural variation in how your content uses the target phrase. The standard version supports one keyphrase per page. Good keyword research before writing produces far better results than retrofitting a keyphrase into finished text. Running the analysis after publishing and patching in keyword occurrences where your content already lacks them is a shortcut. It creates structural problems.

    The Traffic Light System

    Red, orange, green. That is the entire system. Fix the reds. Consider the oranges. Greens mean the check passed. A red on the target phrase missing from the title tag: fix it immediately. Same priority if the meta description is blank. An orange on passive voice: worth reviewing but not urgent. One thing that comes up often in Calgary SEO work: all-green Yoast SEO scores do not guarantee a page ranks. The analysis checks on-page technical factors. Ranking in search results depends on domain authority, backlinks, search intent alignment, and what competitors have published on the same topic. Green lights are the baseline. Not the destination. Tourism-based markets add further nuance. Banff SEO involves seasonal intent patterns and accommodation-driven search behaviour that Yoast’s traffic light analysis does not surface on its own — that layer requires competitive research outside the plugin.

    Writing the Meta Description

    Below the snippet preview in the SEO tab. Write 120 to 155 characters. Include the target phrase. Give a reason to click. Google sometimes replaces your description with an excerpt pulled from your content. That happens regularly. Writing it carefully still matters.

    The Readability Analysis

    Useful. Not a ranking signal. The readability analysis tab checks sentence length, paragraph length, subheading distribution, passive voice use, and transition word frequency. These are general writing quality standards, not requirements from search engines. Readability scores do not directly affect where your content appears in search results. Shorter sentences may help some audiences engage longer with your content. Reader engagement feeds into rankings as a soft signal. How much weight it carries is still debated. Follow the readability analysis where it makes your content clearer. Ignore it where following the suggestions would make your writing worse. It does not know your audience or your voice.

    Yoast SEO Premium vs the Free Version

    Specific features differ. Worth understanding both. The Premium version costs $99 USD per site per year. Most of what small businesses and blogs need day to day is in the free version. Free version covers: the focus keyphrase analysis on every post and page, meta title and description fields, XML sitemap generation, schema markup output, social preview settings, breadcrumbs configuration, and the first-time configuration wizard. That is a solid foundation for your site. Premium adds: the redirect manager, related keyphrases and synonyms in the SEO analysis, AI-generated title and description suggestions, internal linking suggestions as you write, and Semrush integration for keyword data inside the editor. The redirect manager is the most compelling reason to upgrade for sites that change URLs regularly. Broken redirect chains from URL changes silently damage rankings over time. Without it, handling URL changes means editing your .htaccess file manually or running a separate redirect plugin. Semrush integration inside the paid version is convenient for surfacing related keyword data while you write. Solid keyword research that shapes content strategy, however, goes much further. That kind of research defines what your content covers before any page gets written. In-editor suggestions are a supplement, not a substitute. Paid search also works independently. Pay-Per-Click management runs on a separate system from what this tool handles. Both contribute to overall search visibility, but they serve different functions.

    Settings Most Guides Skip

    Worth five minutes before leaving the dashboard. Under SEO > Tools, the bulk editor lets you edit SEO title tags and descriptions for every post and page in a single table view. Sites with 50 or 100 pages needing description updates save significant time here compared to opening each page individually. The file editor under SEO > Tools gives direct dashboard access to your robots.txt file and your .htaccess file. Use it carefully. A typo in robots.txt can block search engine crawlers from your entire site. That warning appears before saving edits for a reason. Double-check before committing any change. For sites with multiple administrators, SEO settings access is restricted to administrators by default. Editors and contributors cannot accidentally alter site-level configurations. That default is worth leaving intact.

Submit your sitemap to Search Console. Check the Coverage report monthly. The SEO services work that moves rankings long-term, authority building, content depth, link acquisition, goes beyond what any SEO tool covers. It sets the floor. What you publish and who links to it does the rest.

    Is Yoast still good?

    Yes. The competitive landscape has tightened. Rank Math has closed the feature gap on things like related keyphrases and position tracking. For a site already running Yoast, switching involves migrating settings with no clear ranking benefit. Starting fresh, though, comparing both tools is worth twenty minutes. Yoast handles the fundamentals reliably and receives active development. Either choice works well. Configuration and content quality matter more than the specific plugin. Time spent debating tools is usually better spent on content depth, link building, or fixing technical issues. That is what actually moves rankings.
